2025 Farm Safety Week
At Blakewell Services Ltd, we know how important it is to keep everyone safe on the farm. As Farm Safety Week returns for its 13th year, we want to take a moment to reflect on why this campaign matters so much – and how we can all play a part in making farming safer.Sadly, farming remains one of the most dangerous jobs in the UK. Over the past year alone, 23 farm workers and four members of the public, including two children, lost their lives on British farms. In Northern Ireland, five agricultural workers were killed. These are not just numbers – they are families, friends, and communities changed forever.
Farm safety is not just a local issue. This year, Farm Safety Week is bringing together voices from across the UK, Ireland, and even as far as Australia, to share stories and encourage simple, life-saving changes. It’s encouraging to see some progress: the number of fatal injuries and serious accidents is slowly falling, and more people are talking about safety than ever before. But there’s still a long way to go.
One of the biggest challenges is changing attitudes. Too often, we hear, “I’ve always done it that way.” Familiarity can breed carelessness, and it’s easy to underestimate the risks of machinery, livestock, and everyday tasks. Our industry is built on experience, but that experience should make us more cautious, not less.
We all have a responsibility to look after ourselves and each other. As Wayne Owen from the Health and Safety Executive recently said, “The responsibility for change rests with the industry itself.” We couldn’t agree more. Every farm, every business, and every individual has a part to play.
That’s why, during Farm Safety Week, we’re offering 10% off all safety equipment in our Farm and Country Store. Whether you need protective clothing, first aid kits, or safety signs, now is the perfect time to make sure you and your team are properly equipped. We want to make it as easy as possible for you to put safety first.
We encourage everyone to take a moment this week to look at your daily routine, your equipment, and your approach to safety. Ask yourself: what can I do today to make my farm safer? It might be a small change, but it could make all the difference.Let’s work together to make sure everyone gets home safely at the end of the day.
